From Laura Holgate, Chair of Twice Exceptional (2e) Parent Group:
Because I have had a few parents respond to my emails regarding interest in friendships and social skills, our next meeting will be April 12th from 10-12noon at the Mustang Library in the auditorium (not the book discussion room where we usually meet) and the topic of discussion will be:
It’s So Much Work to Be Your Friend Strategies for teaching friendship skills and overcoming social incompetence in the classroom, home, and in the community. We will watch a video and have time for discussion.
Our last meeting for the year will be on May 17th from 10-12pm at the Mustang Library in the Book Discussion Room and the topic will be:
Discipline, resolving behavioral issues, and creating a predictable environment to help children flourish.
Barb Ross (parent information network specialist) will be there to help me facilitate this meeting. We will watch the video “When the Chips are Down”. Hopefully this will help you prepare for a summer with your child at home.
For additional information on these meetings or the 2e (twice exceptional), plese contact Laura at twoeparents@yahoo.com

The next Twice Exception (2e) meeting is tomorrow from 10-12 at the Mustang Library. Here are the details:
Happy New Year to all!
I am sure you are all waiting with bated breath to find out what new topics I have in store for you this Saturday. I thought we could start the year off with a little social gathering– we haven’t done that in a while. Let me know if you are interested in attending this Saturday’s meeting. Same place, same time. We can share our trials, tribulations, joys, information, successes, and curiosities regarding our twice exceptional children. Bring something to drink (coffee, tea, or whatever your pleasure) and maybe something to eat…..and we can share our stories– successes and failures. You might want to bring your address books and phone numbers to share with others what has worked for you– doctors, programs, schools, groups, seminars, etc. Please also come prepared with some suggestions for topics you would like to see covered for the coming months.
I hope we can get to know each other and provide support for each other in positive ways. It is often very difficult to manage these children but with support you can find new ways to go about approaching your child(ren).

From the CHADD Valley of the Sun Chapter:
Children and Adults with Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) Meeting
With the new year, we will begin our new day, time and location for our support group meetings. We will be meeting at Robb and Stucky in the Community Room from 6-8 p.m. on the third Tuesday (the 15th) of the month. The Robb and Stucky store is located in Kierland on Scottsdale Road just south of Bell Road. The address is 15440 N. Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85254. The phone number is (480) 922-0011.
For those of you who attended our last meeting, thank you! It was great seeing some of our long-time friends as well as many new faces. I think it was unanimous that our new meeting space is terrific! Thanks to Robb and Stucky for providing a lovely room for us to meet in and refreshments!
I am pleased to announce that Christopher Nicholls will be speaking at our January meeting. Dr. Nicholls is a neuropsychologist here in the Valley and will be speaking on evaluations. He will talk about the importance of obtaining a thorough evaluation, how to obtain the necessary pieces, what should be included and how to use the information gathered for the benefit of your child/spouse/self. Dr. Nicholls is very knowledgeable about AD/HD and CHADD and worked closely with Dr. Clare Jones, for whom our group is named. I know that you will find the information he has to share with us to be very valuable.
I hope that you will be able to join us. You will leave feeling empowered. I assure you!
As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Shauna Mattson, SEPAC secretary, documented the questions and answer from our meeting with the Scottsdale District Special Education Department on November 28th. The meeting notes are now posted on our web site for your review under Meetings.
Some of the questions included:
- How can they help us so that parents who are advocating for their children are not seen as adversarial by the administration?
- What can be done to improve the electives for students in Middle School and High School to allow for accommodations in more electives?
- What is being done to help students with highly functioning autism and Asperger’s to be more main-streamed vs. special education?
- AIMS-why can’t there be any accommodations for this test?
Lois Healey passed out a packet with the programs that are available, a description of each program, who the program is best suited for, and which schools offer which programs. Copies of these programs are now posted on our web site.
