The Arizona Dept. of Education has just released its fall issue of Network News.
Highlights include:
- Monitoring Your Child’s Progress – Progress reports are one of the most under utilized pieces of information that parents receive regarding their child’s special education services.
- Measurable Goals – Goals provide the basis for instruction, describing what a child needs related to their disability. Goals, contained in an IEP, describe what a student can reasonably expect to accomplish within one year.
- Arizona Legislative Update – By the conclusion of the 48th Legislative Session of the Arizona State Legislature, a significant change to the powers of a school district’s governing board or county school superintendent passed, affecting students with disabilities.

The latest from Sydney Fox, board member of Special Olympics in Arizona:
Prior to this season, Special Olympics were only available in Scottsdale to those 18 years and older. Special Olympics will be adding new programs to Special Olympics in Scottsdale, such as bowling, basketball, and cheer, with a strong focus on unified team sports, where Special Olympic athletes are integrated with typical athletes. Funding is available and Special Olympics is looking to the community for input on the type of recreation programs they would like to see included as the program in Scottsdale grows to include elementary through high school age students. For current information about the Special Olympic Programs, visit the Special Olympics web site and click on “East Valley Area”.
